The Flyers had another heartbreaking loss against the Toppenish Yankees Wednesday after overcoming a two-run deficit briefly taking the lead in the fourth inning, but lost it in the fifth during a Yankee rally. The game was called due to darkness in the sixth inning ending any possibility of a Flyer comeback.
Al Miller got the start for the Flyers and held the Yankees to two runs in two innings with the help of some nice fielding by his teammates, as well as helping himself out by handling a come-backer to the mound. He gave up four hits, three walks and struck out one. Tyler Schultz, a newcomer to the team, made his debut in the third working well through the Yankee line-up for two innings allowing no runs on two hits, hitting two batters, and striking out one. The fifth inning brought trouble for Tyler with two more walks, a hit, and a pitching change. Mark Clements took the mound with the bases loaded and got his first batter to hit back to the mound for an out. He finished the inning, with five Yankee runs scoring, and worked into the sixth giving up three hits and walking one overall. Dion Tobia faced the final batter in the sixth inning ringing up a strike out with three straight pitches.
Dion (1-3) led off the scoring for the Flyers starting with a double in his first at bat. He walked, stole two bases, and scored in his next at bat. Anthony Allen (3-3) had a great night at the plate hitting three singles. Bryce Hodson (1-2), Derek Kihn (1-2), and Scott Podruzny (1-3) contributed with singles. Overall, the Flyers had seven hits, eight walks, nine stolen bases, and nine strike outs while scoring five runs and stranding nine runners on base.
The Flyers will face the Yankees again on Wed, 7/7 at Riverside.
Despite a win (on a forfeit due to timing issues), the Northwest Flyers walked away disappointed after battling the TCABL and the heat in Richland Sunday.
Ryan Hill started against the Athletics in game one as the temperature peaked at 90 degrees. Ryan had a nice outing giving up four runs in five innings on six hits, five walks, and striking out seven before leaving the game upon reaching his rehab mandated pitch count limit. Tyler Smith worked an inning and a half walking three and allowing two runs. Pat Bauer entered in the seventh to finish the game allowing two runs on two hits and walking three.
The Flyers started off hot scoring five runs in the first inning on hits by Jacob Marshall (1-3), Ryan Hill (3-4, HR), Tyler Smith (1-4), and Pat Bauer (2-2). Al Miller (2-2) and Mitch Wagner (2-2) also contributed to the twelve total Flyer hits. However, the Flyer runs dried up after two more in the third inning bringing the game total to seven with five walks and leaving ten on base.
Game two brought a new team, the Triplets, and new umpires, both proving to be formidable challenges. Jacob Marshall took the mound to start the game and worked quickly through the first four batters allowing no hits or runs, but hitting two. Jacob worked with pin-point accuracy as required in the next two innings eventually working through the Richland line-up twice resulting in twelve runs on eleven hits, striking out one while walking two and nailing one batter in the leg. Al Miller gave the ump something new to look at in the fourth inning and was successful allowing no runs while giving up just one hit, one walk, and striking out four.
The Flyers needed some magic at the plate in game two, but were unable to conjure up anything convincing against the Richland forces at work. Sitting down in order, the Flyers failed to get a hit, and booked just one walk, while working through the line-up twice in six innings. The seventh brought a little hope as Dion Tobia started the inning with a single, eventually scoring, followed by Ryan Hill and Pat Bauer also hitting singles allowing Ryan to score the second Flyer run, but they could not overcome the damage done by Richland early on, ending the game in the seventh inning.
Though facing extremely tough conditions, the Flyers performed admirably making some great plays in the field (Photos) and were a class act overall. The boys have several opportunities in the coming weeks to show their skills and talents and to play some great ball as they take on two advanced college programs at Portland and Idaho in addition to their final games with local teams and the Richland TCABL.
The Flyers faltered again today giving one to the Toppenish Yankees at the Riverside Christian ballpark in Yakima. Five Yakima pitchers took their turn at the Yankees with mixed results. Bryce Hodson, Stephen Boynton, Pat Bauer, Mike Ward and Mark Clements combined for seven k’s, eleven hits, six walks, three hit batters, and gave up 12 runs—including a home run. The defense made some fine plays to help, including a nice double play in the sixth inning by Adam Baisinger at second and Tyler Smith, short stop, to Bryce at first, but struggled overall committing seven errors.
Yakima's bats were still working today ringing up a total of nine runs on nine hits, drawing six walks and leaving six on base. A little slow to start, the Flyers were down four to nothing going into the fourth inning when Pat Bauer (1-1) drew a walk and was the first to score followed by Tyler Smith (1-3) and Al Miller who took his base after he was beaned in the head. Dion Tobia (1-4) continued the scoring in the fifth inning when he hit his first homerun out of Riverside park followed by a homer by Bryce Hodson (3-5) and a double by Jacob Marshall (2-5). Mike Ward (1-3) was right behind with a homerun of his own, and Pat crossed the plate a second time after being walked. A new Yankee pitcher put a stop to the Flyer hits over the next three innings sitting down nine batters, but Yakima came back to life in the bottom of the ninth hoping to rally and win. With two outs, after two hits and one run in, it looked like they were coming back until a base running misstep cut short the effort to end the game.
The Flyers travel to Richland Sunday 6/27 to play two against the Tri-Cities Men’s League.
Northwest Flyers breakout! The Flyers woke up their bats in Thursday’s game against the Sunnyside men’s team taking their first win of the season 11 to 1. Yakima banged out eleven hits, walked eight times, and struck out four times. Scotty Podruzny went 2 for 2, Stephen Boynton was 2 for 3, and Ryan Hill contributed a home run. Stephen Boynton put on another show from the mound throwing a no-hitter through the sixth inning before giving up a single after striking out nine (ten total through seven innings). Sunnyside scored their single run on a misplayed fly ball to right resulting in an in-the-park homerun.
The Flyers take on Toppenish at home Saturday 6/26, 10 A.M.
The Flyers hit the road at 6 A.M. Saturday to face the Inland Northwest Men’s Baseball League and Trail B.C. for two games in Spokane. Excited to take on the INMBL again after last year’s victory, the Flyers were also looking forward to taking on an opponent from outside of the U.S. for the first time, Trail, B.C., a tournament team from Canada. Unfortunately, the Yakima boys were outmatched, losing both games, but they worked hard and played great baseball.
Dion Tobia got the start against Spokane and was quickly taken to task giving up three hits, a walk, and allowing four runs before settling down. He held Spokane to just two hits and no runs in the second and third innings, but they got back to business in the fourth with several hits ending Dion’s outing. Tyler Smith took the mound, but struggled to find a groove and was replaced by Al Miller who ended the inning. Totals for the fourth: eight hits, two walks, and eight runs. Miller finished the game giving up seven hits, three runs, and striking out four. The defense has been improving steadily this season and left their all on the field with a diving catch attempt by Jacob Marshall and nice fielding by Neil Gregg at second and Tyler Smith at short.
The Flyers scored three runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Dion Tobia was 2 for 3, Jacob Marshall had a great game going 3 for 4 with a double and two singles.
Flyers defense did a great job getting outs in game two as Yakima jumped out in front of Canada with one run in the first and three runs in the fourth, holding onto the lead until the seventh inning.
Stephen Boynton had a super outing as starting pitcher two giving up just one run on five hits, putting three batters on base, and striking out three through six innings. Inning seven brought trouble and Jacob Marshall came in for relief. Stephen and Jacob combined in the seventh giving up six runs on three hits and three walks. Jacob finished the game with one hit, one walk and no runs in the eighth.
Trail challenged Yakima from the mound as well as the plate limiting the Flyers to four runs on seven hits while striking out six, and walking or hitting five. Anthony Allen had a great day at the plate going 2 for 3 with a double and successful bunt. Al Miller and Mark Clements also hit doubles.
Thursday's game brought another tough loss for the Flyers as they faced the Yakima Orioles at the Riverside ball park. The weather was perfect for Mitchell Wagner's first start, but after giving up two hits and one run, he was unable to return to the mound after the first inning due to shoulder pain. Leading off for the Flyers, Tyler Smith worked his base on balls stealing two bases while Ryan Hill stole one after being hit by a pitch, but neither were able to score.
Al Miller faced the next eight Oriole batters striking out one and holding them to one score on a home run with the help of an amazing diving catch in left field by Ryan Barber. Bryce Hodson took up the charge for the Flyers stealing two bases after being walked in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Barber. The Oriole pitchers worked their way through the rest of the Flyer line-up twice holding them hitless while striking out three through the fifth inning.
Stephen Boynton also made quick work of the seven Oriole batters he faced in the fourth and fifth innings striking out three and sitting down another with a big assist from Mark Clement's diving catch attempt in right field that got the call from the umpire for an out. Derek Kihn, struggled on the mound in the sixth trying to work through a leg injury, and gave up just the fourth Oriole hit of the game putting the runner on second who scored their third run on a sacrifice fly. Ryan Hill entered to finish the inning, and the game, striking out three more Oriole hitters, giving up a walk and plunking one batter, but giving up no hits.
The Flyers rallied a bit in the sixth inning with a base hit by Bryce who scored on a double by Tony Duffield, but couldn't keep it going striking out four times in the sixth and seventh innings to total seven k's for the game and stranding seven on base.
The Flyers travel to Spokane Saturday to face two tough teams, the Spokane Bears and Trails, B.C., a team from British Columbia.
The Flyers started their home stand with four games against the Cobras, a college team from Portland. The Flyers slugged in out with the Cobras scoring 25 runs over the weekend and even pushing one game to 11 innings and a tie due to darkness. Despite many outstanding individual performances including great outings by several pitchers, a bare-handed grab by Dion Tobia at short to throw out the runner at first, an incredible diving catch by Pat Bauer in left, and an amazing over-the-shoulder catch by Jacob Marshall in right field, as well as great plays by veteran players such as Adam Baisinger and Scott Podruzny who have returned to the team after being away for several years, the home team could not pull out a win this weekend.
Junior Urekar took the mound in the first game Saturday for the Flyers dominating with five k's and giving up only one earned run, followed by Mitchell Wagner. The hurlers, held the Cobras scoreless until the fourth inning, and combined for eight strike outs, eleven walks, and eight hits, stranding seven runners.
The Flyers drew first blood on a run by Dion Tobia who capitalized on a walk by stealing twice then scoring on a hit by Ryan Hill in the first inning. Mark Clements hit safely on in the second, followed by Jose Meza who scored after hitting a double and Pat Bauer who was hit by a pitch and ultimately scored giving the Flyers two more runs. The action picked up again in the fifth with a single by Ryan Hill followed by a walk by Tyler Smith, a single by Jacob Marshall and a double by Scott Podruzny resulting in the final four Flyer runs.
A new Cobra pitcher shut down the Flyers in the bottom of the fifth and ended the game allowing no additional hits.
The Cobras started out strong in game two Saturday scoring six runs in the first three innings. Stephen Boynton, Ryan Hill and Dion Tobia combined their pitching efforts allowing just one more run in the eighth inning, striking out ten overall, putting seven on base, and stranding eight runners.
The Flyers matched those seven runs starting slowly with a double and a score by Ryan Hill in the first, followed by hits in the fifth by Adam Baisinger and Ryan Hill, a single by Junior Urekar in the sixth, a single by Jacob Marshall and a double by Mike Ward for two more runs in the seventh. Jose Meza singled in the eighth, but the final Flyer runs came in the ninth on a double by Derek Kihn and a run by Junior after reaching base on an error.
The Flyers banged out twelve hits, walked seven times, had eight strike outs, and left fifteen runners on base.
Game three started with beautiful, sunny weather Sunday morning with Jacob Marshall on the mound giving up just one run in four innings. Tyler Smith, Mike Ward and Scott Podruzny combined to finish the game allowing eight runs while striking out four.
The Flyers rang up eight runs on eleven hits, including doubles by Jacob Marshall, Ryan Hill and Pat Bauer, seven k's, and four walks, and left nine on base.
The Flyers struggled in the last game of the long weekend giving up thirteen runs while only scoring three despite lots of hard work and hustle. Kudos to Dion Tobia for two doubles. Please submit additional highlights for this game.
The Northwest Flyers opened their 2010 season by suiting up twenty-one men–the largest squad in the history of the team—to go at it against the Tri-Cities Adult Baseball League in Richland, WA. Five new players, and a new coach, joined sixteen veterans for two nine-inning games against the Slow Rollers and the Atoms.
The Flyers jumped out in front in game one against the Slow Rollers starting with a home run in the first inning by Ryan Hill. They scored five more runs in the second inning on hits by Junior Urekar, Mike Ward, Pat Bauer, Jose Meza, and Bryce Hodson to lead 6-0. The Slow Rollers’ pitcher settled down in the third holding the Flyers to one hit in the next two innings while the Roller offense got hot scoring four runs. Jacob Marshall drove in a run in the fifth then made it home on a hit by Seth Englebert. The Slow Rollers answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth shrinking the Flyer lead to 8-6. The Tri-Cities club took over in the sixth inning holding the Flyers to just two more runs through the ninth and striking out six batters while driving in six more runs of their own for a final score of 12-10 Rollers.
Game two against the Atoms showed promise as Ryan Hill again started off with a home run in the first inning driving home Tyler Smith. However, the Atoms hit back with two runs of their own in the first inning and quickly took control of the game striking out eleven Flyer batters in six innings and taking several Flyer pitchers to task by scoring 15 more runs to end the game early with a score of 17-2 Atoms.
Not reflected in the disappointing scores of the day is the great effort made by the team on a new field (which presented some unique challenges of it's own) against two tough, experienced teams already eight games into their season. We look forward to seeing this talented group of guys come together and play some terrific baseball.
